Self-massage

In ayurvedic philosophy, self-massage (Abhyanga) is a prime wellbeing ritual. It is considered as a regeneration therapy of great importance that allows us to cultivate vitality and maintain a state of balance in everyday life.

There are numerous benefits related to self-massage (Abhyanga):

  • Dislodges impurities found under the skin and in fat tissues
  • Stimulates lymphatic circulation and waste elimination
  • Helps us anchor in the present moment
  • Releases oxytocin, otherwise known as the “happiness” hormone
  • Lubricates our joints
  • Slows down the ageing process
  • Releases stress
  • Enhances our muscle tone and increase the skin’s elasticity
  • Calms the nervous system
  • Prepares us for sleep (useful in cases of insomnia)

Vegetable oils, which are moisturizing and nourishing for the scalp, hair, nails and skin, are not used at random in these ancestral therapies; they are used mainly for two reasons:

  • To act as a lubricant to maintain flexibility in the skin, muscles and tissues
  • To act as a carrier to accelerate the absorption of medicinal plants through the skin

With time, I have developed a non-traditional and practical approach in using ayurvedic oils with plants from Quebec. Firstly, as a morning ritual – after meditation and before the start of our daily activities. Another option is to self-massage at the end of the day, before slipping into the arms of Morpheus; to release stress and prepare our body for sleep.

Knowing which elements are predominant in our constitution allows us to make conscious choices on a daily basis, helps us to better understand ourselves, which in turn aids us in personalizing our wellness ritual.
